The Friday Five

Feeling a Little List-less?

By The Editors

It’s Friday! If you’re anything like us, you have a long list of must-do’s and want-to-do’s for the coming weekend. Before you ease on out the office door and start checking things off that list, take a peek at this week’s Friday Five. We’ve got links to lists that could change your thinking on several fronts.

1. A list for marketing differently. Really. Could you knock off looking for precedent to drive your marketing? Marketing guy Ross Fishman begs you to drop banalities with his lighthearted—but right on—list of Top 25 Law Marketing Clichés to Avoid. Dare to be weird, he says, it will help you stand out.

2. A list of reasons to say “no.” If you dread returning to the office on Monday because, well, frankly, you can’t bear one more insane request or tedious assignment, you’ll want to read the list of tips in “Can You Say No to Your Boss?” Evil HR Lady Suzanne Lucas has great advice for figuring out when you really can say no, and when you should probably just suck it up.

3. A list of “Fast Cities.” The gorgeous, highly readable Fast Company magazine has a mission to “inspire readers and users to think beyond traditional boundaries, lead conversations and create the future of business.” To that end, they’ve published The United States of Innovation, a map and a list of cities that support bold, mind- and business-expanding ideas. (Guess which city had the fastest-growing tech job market this past year?) Again with thinking differently!

4. A list of all cities! Whether contemplating your next job or office location, or checking the surroundings before sending your baby off to college, you need the lowdown on cities from time to time. City-Data.com delivers all the data you could possibly want in a way that’s very easy to grasp. Go on, type in your zip code and get the charts and graphs on everything from median income to ancestry, length of commute and home sales to air quality trends.

5. A list of places to go (once you finally get out the door). Each year we await Lonely Planet’s list of favorite 10 destination cities. Places you’ll ache to visit, or brag that you have. Lonely Planet’s Top 10 Cities for 2011 will send you in some totally new directions. Get our your calendar and start planning. Ghent, anyone?
