Hot New Legal Technology Products

By Joan Feldman

ABA TECHSHOW 2012 takes place this week in Chicago, March 29-31, and there’s enough legal technology product news to keep the exposition hall buzzing way past closing time. In addition to the launches and upgrades we announced earlier in the year, today we’ve got highlights from some new product announcements released just in time for this conference. (Pssst. If you’re in town, be sure to stop by the Chicago Hilton’s exposition hall to run these new products through their paces—expo-only passes are free—and watch for special deals and contests. We hear there’s a new iPad or two up for grabs!)

  • Law Bulletin Publishing Company is launching JuraLaw this week, a new software-as-a-service (SaaS) product that will offer a single integrated system for managing the entire litigation process, including calendars and dockets. JuraLaw integrates critical law firm case data with calendar events, court dockets, court calls and court rules from across the nation—with unmatched coverage via LBPC in tracking Illinois court calls. Highlights include calendar event management tools, docket management tools that provide complete histories of cases and allow users to record important events associated with individual cases, plus robust reporting and searching features.
  • Rocket Matter, a leading online practice management and time-tracking application for small to midsize firms, announced last week a publicly available application programming interface for Rocket Matter (RMAPI). RMAPI allows other software companies to seamlessly and securely retrieve and send information to Rocket Matter without error-prone downloads and import files. Rocket Matter’s first API integration is with Chrometa, an automatic time-capture technology for Macs and PCs. Rocket Matter also announced the incorporation of ABA Task Codes and LEDES 98. Via Rocket Matter’s autocompletion technology, users don’t need to recall codes—they can enter the description, and the ABA code will be pulled into their billable activity. LEDES 98 invoices can be generated one matter at a time or across all matters via Rocket Matter’s Batch Billing functionality.
  • Clio announced that it has launched the Clio Platform, also an application programming interface (API) that allows third-party developers to integrate with and extend Clio’s functionality. Clio is a leading web-based practice management system that is specifically designed for solo practitioners and small law firms. API launch partners include the virtual law firm platform DirectLaw; ZenCash, an application that automates the entire receivables management process; and background time-tracking and capture program Chrometa, which will be available in April.
  • MyCase, a social practice management platform for legal professionals, has also launched its Open API and the MyCase App Bar, a practice management marketplace specific to MyCase users, as well as a technology platform for legal product and service providers. The new MyCase App Bar leverages MyCase’s sharing and collaboration features to provide one-stop access to system features, as well as third-party apps, aiming to give users a central location to accomplish their tasks. Apps initially being developed for the MyCase App Bar include Outlook Sync, Google Sync, social media apps such as Twitter, and apps focused on depositions and court rules. In addition, MyCase is launching MyCase Draft, a new word processor and document generation tool that lets you create and edit and share documents from within MyCase.
  • Amicus Attorney. Gavel & Gown Software will be making a major announcement about its line of practice management products during its “Amicus in the Cloud” presentation at ABA TECHSHOW March 29—along with a sneak preview of its lastest product.
  • Deadlines.com, Aderant’s online legal deadline calculation service, is announcing a simpler pricing model that provides law firms with the ability to generate unlimited events for cases. The Deadlines.com service utilizes Aderant CompuLaw’s court rules databases and patented deadline calculation technology to provide accurate, reliable and comprehensive legal deadlines on a per-case basis. The new pricing goes into effect on April 1.
  • Digomé is launching its Barrister mobile app. The multi-featured app gives firms the ability to give clients direct access to their pertinent contact information, attorney bios, areas of expertise and messaging capabilities. Plus, Barrister app firms will be listed in the Apple, Android and BlackBerry stores and can enable clients to interact with them via their mobile devices.
  • National Purchasing Partners (NPP) and e-Cycle recently announced a mobile buyback program that trades cash for used mobile devices and tablets and recycles end-of-life devices and accessories at no cost. e-Cycle also offers certified data deletion and complimentary FedEx shipping. e-Cycle buys nearly 500 models of mobile phones. For more information, and to sign up for an NPP membership for discounts on other products, view the e-Cycle Promotion for Legal Members.
  • nQueue Billback has a new scan engine, iA Route, that works in tandem with the company’s iA Scan interface to help users better capture and manage scanning costs. With iA Route, users can direct scans right from their multifunction printers while capturing key information about the scan, the matter and the client—effectively recovering costs in the background. Scans can be automatically routed directly to a document management system, time-and-billing system or a user’s email or desktop—anywhere in the firm. iA Route supports popular formats such as Word and searchable PDF, and is fully scalable to support any number of users. nQueueBillback provides software-based cost recovery systems.
  • RenewData, a provider of review acceleration and media restoration solutions, has introduced non-native extraction and restoration of encrypted tapes. With its proprietary “non-native environment” technology, files are extracted directly from media without the need to re-create the native environment. That means files that span across more than one tape can be extracted or restored without multiple reads or having to process each tape in the original sequence. Combined with the company’s “single-pass” processing technology, the number of steps and the amount of time required for processing media can be significantly streamlined.
