Summer Reading

By The Editors

Oh, go on, you know you want to. Throw the mess on your desk into piles and head home early. Pour a nice tall cool one, put your feet up in a shady spot and take a bite out of your summer reading list. Don’t have a list? That’s what we’re here for. Today’s Friday Five features five collections of reading lists. Everything from the ridiculous to the sublime, from juicy novels to meaty reads. Now there’s absolutely no excuse to be found in your office over the weekend!

1. Mind expanders. At Squidoo, the irrepressible Seth Godin offers up this mind-expanding list with everything from thrillers to the future of membership organizations. If the medium is your message, take a look at iwantmedia.com’s summer must reads, and the Inbound Internet Marketing Blog’s quintessential summer reading list for inbound marketers. (Heads up! These are free ebooks!)

2. Guilty pleasures. The LA Times has a great graphical page of summer reading sorted by category. For a sure thing to toss into your beach bag, take a peak at what New York Times Book Review editors have set aside for their good read. Or take up the argument for sport lit at the But. If. And. That. blog. If you just can’t drop your need to achieve, then Time magazine’s All Time 100 Novels or the BBC’s Big Read are made for you. Print them out. Check off the one’s you’ve already read. And the race is on!

3. Feed your elite business brain. From the over-achievers over at Poets and Quants, Robert Bruner of the University of Virginia offers a dean’s list of summer reading to absorb, plus you’ll find a neat blog series on the books that shaped the B-school elite. And, for a little light yacht reading, check out What the Rich Are Reading, from the WSJ Wealth Report—and the complete annual summer reading list that J.P. Morgan’s Private Bank sends its richest clients.

4. Fit for foodies. You don’t need anything more than the list from The 2011 James Beard Foundation Annual Awards for best food books—covering cookbooks and food writing. There’s everything from Nordic cooking to, well, pig. This year’s cookbook of the year? Oaxaca al Gusto: An Infinte Gastronomy. Mmmm, our mouths are watering just thinking about it.

5. Do Not Reads. There’s something for every disposition on the summer reading lists. Personally, we’re planning to steer clear of the 10 Devastatingly Sad Books. But maybe that’s your thing. We’d rather watch video of one of Jimmy Fallon’s Do Not Read Lists, always good for a snort, a giggle and … a little poor taste.

Bonus: eBooks Galore. In case you havent’ noticed, some time ago the New York Times Best Seller lists ballooned into an extraordinary collection of lists. Of particular note are the strictly ebook lists, both fiction and non-fiction.
