Speaking and Lawyering: Balancing the Jobs

As a lawyer and businessperson, you have two jobs in one. Some of us, including me, add the job of professional speaker to our already teeming calendars. Maybe you've considered taking on some speaking gigs yourself. What's a typical day in the life of a lawyer-speaker? Lawyer at laptop paste options in word

Video: Pasting Text for Better Formatting

If you're like most lawyers, you recycle text from other documents a lot. But cutting-and-pasting is a frequent source of formatting disasters in Microsoft Word. Instead of always using CTRL-V to paste, take an extra split second to preview your paste result so you can move on with your editing faster. Here's a quick video tip.

Don’t Be Tricked by These False Friends

Some words sound like they mean one thing when they actually mean something very different. Using one of these false friends incorrectly could cause you a problem. But It Sounded Right … The term “false friends” traditionally refers to words in a foreign language that sound like English words. If you want a drinking glass in France, don’t ask the server for “glace;” you might get a glass, but it will be filled with ice, the translation of “glace.” You really will be embarrassed if you use the Spanish “embarazada” to mean embarrassed because it actually means “pregnant.”

Domo Arigato: How to Prepare for the Coming Robot Apocalypse

You’ll have heard by now that the robots are coming for you. First, they’ll take your job. Then, your home and family. Next, your car. And, just when you think it’s over, that’s when they swipe your favorite coffee mug. The robot thing gets a lot of media coverage but, in terms of what lawyers concern themselves with, it’s not so much that a robotic replica will one day be doing your job as a lawyer; it’s more like intelligent devices and systems will slowly eat away certain aspects of your job until there’s too little left on the bone for you to make a viable living. In the interim, there are some things you, as an attorney, can do to forestall the coming robot apocalypse.

Ways Screen Shot Tools Help You Communicate

You may find people taking pictures of their device screens with their own (or other people’s) phones. Don’t do that. There’s an easier way. Instead, investigate your device’s built-in ability to take screen shots — also known as screen grabs or screen captures.

Content Marketing Tips for Lawyers

Harnessing the Intuitive, Persuasive Power of Analogy

We all struggle with conveying complicated ideas, whether in spoken or written communication. The issue is particularly acute in the fields of law and medicine, where professionals work to explain issues and situations in which the audience typically has far less understanding than the professional — and where time is of the essence. Well-constructed analogies are particularly effective in these situations. They perform these vital functions:

The Essential Cloud: Top Tools for Lawyers, New and Improved

It has been six years since I wrote my initial list of essential cloud tools for lawyers. Since that time, the cloud has become near-ubiquitous. Attorneys are comfortable with it. The smartphone era relies on it. We’re at the point where we can’t imagine living without it. It was interesting reviewing the list from back then and updating it for the present day. Evernote, MyFax and Efax were booted for various reasons, including lack of relevance and failure to keep up with the times. Dropbox and Rocket Matter still made the list. And the emergence of new, amazing cloud products have made the list fresher and much more exciting. As of late 2017, these are the top essential cloud tools for lawyers.

The Invisible Lawyer: Shed the Status

It’s the old "tree falling in the forest" conundrum: If a lawyer develops expertise, but no one knows about it … are they even an expert? “Becoming an expert” is a great differentiation strategy, but the challenge is making your expertise visible to new clients. Since clients are rarely equipped to judge expertise, your differentiation may go unnoticed by the people who matter most. Which begs the question: Does invisible expertise even exist? If you’re committed to making your legal expertise visible, you won’t have to worry about answering that question.
