In the following, I hope to convince deeply professional, widely respected, well-educated, multi-degreed grown-ups to doodle. Doodling may be the very last activity you'd look to for improving your productivity, uncorking your creative genii and deepening your listening skills. You are already — just three long sentences into this post — rolling your eyes so hard your hat fell off. But stay with me. There’s science. There’s history. There are famous people.

You’ll have heard by now that the robots are coming for you. First, they’ll take your job. Then, your home and family. Next, your car. And, just when you think it’s over, that’s when they swipe your favorite coffee mug. The robot thing gets a lot of media coverage but, in terms of what lawyers concern themselves with, it’s not so much that a robotic replica will one day be doing your job as a lawyer; it’s more like intelligent devices and systems will slowly eat away certain aspects of your job until there’s too little left on the bone for you to make a viable living. In the interim, there are some things you, as an attorney, can do to forestall the coming robot apocalypse.

Growing law firms need cash, but cash can get tight. All firms should have access to reserve cash, such as a line of credit, but applying for a loan can be nerve-wracking — especially when bankers start throwing out unfamiliar terms. It has been six years since I wrote my initial list of essential cloud tools for lawyers. Since that time, the cloud has become near-ubiquitous. Attorneys are comfortable with it. The smartphone era relies on it. We’re at the point where we can’t imagine living without it. It was interesting reviewing the list from back then and updating it for the present day. Evernote, MyFax and Efax were booted for various reasons, including lack of relevance and failure to keep up with the times. Dropbox and Rocket Matter still made the list. And the emergence of new, amazing cloud products have made the list fresher and much more exciting. As of late 2017, these are the top essential cloud tools for lawyers.

It’s the old "tree falling in the forest" conundrum: If a lawyer develops expertise, but no one knows about it … are they even an expert? “Becoming an expert” is a great differentiation strategy, but the challenge is making your expertise visible to new clients. Since clients are rarely equipped to judge expertise, your differentiation may go unnoticed by the people who matter most. Which begs the question: Does invisible expertise even exist? If you’re committed to making your legal expertise visible, you won’t have to worry about answering that question.

While you may not be able to control the economy, the legislature, regulations or trends, you may be able to stay one step ahead of them. That’s where the product life cycle comes in. If you understand the product life cycle, you may be able to avoid the valleys and stay ahead of the competition. Don’t be put off by the term “product” — the concept applies to legal services, too.

Your law firm cares about your personal and professional growth. But make no mistake, the law is a business — often a cutthroat one. Your firm has made a big investment in you in terms of salary, benefits, training and overhead. It expects a return on that investment.  As a young lawyer, it’s important to understand your firm’s point of view as to your value, and to a great degree it comes down to dollars and cents.
